FACT 32: All of my pets are named after famous musicians. My two cats are named Ani (after Ani Difranco) and Myla (after Miles Davis). The newest addition is our English Cream Golden Retriever. We named him Mingus after Charles Mingus, a jazz bassist.
Fact 58: My mother loves me unconditionally ever though I’ve been driving her nuts since birth!
Fact 601: The tattoo on the inside of my left arm is a Quaking Aspen tree that I drew in honor of my brother who past away in August of 2004. They are indigenous to Lake Tahoe, Ca where he lived and worked as an Emergency EMT for almost 20 years. And just for the record, “Yes! It took over 2 hours and hurt like hell but I never cried.”
Fact 82: My Mormor and her friend Gloria have been best friends for 60 years. They met in grade school and still spend time together at least once a week. They have taught me the meaning of friendship and I long to have that when I am old.
Fact 12: I am allergic to all tropical fruits that contain tiny black edible seeds in them as well as mango. They cause me to go into respiratory distress. Thankfully I can eat pineapples, my favorite fruit.
Fact 61: My sister and I are my father’s two favorite things.
FACT 3: My least favorite word in the English language is moist. I hate it. It makes me squirm when others say it, when advertising uses it or if I can’t find another word to use in lieu of it.
Fact 55: I am admittedly addicted to soup.
Fact 19: I have been caffeine free for almost 14 years. It causes me to have hospitalizing panic attacks, so I’ve never tried Jager Bombs or a good ole’ Absolute and Red Bull. You will, on occasion catch me sipping on a decaf hazelnut coffee, and sneaking a Reese Cup but only in very small doses.
Fact 12: My favorite movie of all time is the Goonies. I have watched it more than I have watched any other movie. There were actually several cuts of the film and I have seen them all, my favorite being the original version.
Fact 8: I embrace my inner tomboy.
Fact 2000: I never laugh as hard as I do with my girlfriends. They are my chosen family.
Fact 4: I began studying dance as a young child in all genres including tap, jazz, ballet, point and international folk. At age 16 I was cast in CARNIVALE!, an International dance and music group. We toured all over the east coast, including Walt Disney World in 1993. Currently I focus in Latin American Ballroom and it continues to be my favorite of all the dance I have done.
Fact 760: Originally, I wanted to become a Marine Biologist. As a kid I had the opportunity to study with Project Oceanology and The Mystic Marine life Aquarium in Connecticut, where I am from, all the way through high school. At age 16 I traveled all the way to Belize to help assist researchers on a Dolphin and Reef research project. To this day my love for marine life is ever-present.
Fact 1977: In 2003 I competed in Red Bull’s international competition called FLUGTAG. Teams from all over the world submit blueprints to build and attempt to fly non-powered flying machines. My team was invited to compete in the event that took place in New York City. We did not win.
Fact 322: Since turning 19 years old I have lived in Connecticut, California, Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Jalisco (Mexico) and Parana (Brasil).

Fact 27: I once helped saved people from a burning building. My friend and I were driving through the city when we noticed a couch on fire on someone’s porch. She kicked in the door and rescued the people inside while I stayed on the phone with 911 until help arrived. Within 4 minutes the entire building was up in flames.
Fact 8: My cat Myla loves when I sing Opera to her. It’s like I am the pied piper, whenever I begin to sing she has to find me and crawl up onto my chest, regardless of where she is or what she is doing.

Fact 402: In October of 2007 we packed up all of things, put them in storage, filled 4 suitcases, grabbed the cats and our passports and moved to Paso Ancho, Jalisco, a small colonas in the foothills of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It was the best decision we ever made. The experiences we had there for 8 months were life-changing, eye opening and humbling. We miss it every day.
Fact 100: Although I loved riding my bike as a kid it wasn’t until just recently that I have rediscovered those amazing inventions that balance on two wheels. In the summer I try to bike at least 10 miles every other day.
Fact 731: I have an irrational fear of being struck by lightning. Not only that, I know 2 people who actually have been struck and it scares the living ‘bejesus outta me!
Well geeeeez, what took you so long? Your search is over, you have found the most fun blog out in Cyberspace! There are all sorts of fun things to read and look at here. If you look above you will notice a funky viewing box. Well, not actually above YOU, who know’s what’s above you; Drop ceilings with strange things peeking through those tiny little styrofoam looking holes. Ceiling fans that you have reminded yourself every day for 117 days that you need to clean but can’t seem to figure out quite how to reach that layer of grey furry stuff. The sun, very bright, and now you’ve looked up and are struggling to see this screen through the mysterious black spots that are now appearing everywhere. Like I said, who knows. What I meant was if you look above these series of words (which collectively create poorly formed sentences to create this very instructive paragraph) you will notice the funky viewing box, like I said. There you can check out some of my new favorite pictures, notice how you can scroll through them using the green arrows to the right and left. You can also scope out my latest favorite recipes! Aside from the whole, “Almost burning the apartment down trying to put out a grease fire with tap water” incident, I am actually a pretty rockin’ cook and decided I wanted to share that with you! Although I am not the best baker so if you a looking for a great tiramisu recipe, you might want to stalk Betty Ford or Boop or Crocker, whatever the heck her name is. I have also decided to share awesome, funny, head-shaking, conversation starting, completely useless information. You will find a new fact of the day in the ARE YOU BLEEPIN” KIDDING ME section and fabulous stories about the not so intelligent decision making in our world in HEY YOU! OUT OF THE GENE POOL.
The rest of the blog is pretty self explanatory and easy to navigate. The posts are drop downs so if you see something cool, just click on it the view it in it’s entirety. Oh, and I LOVE comments. Tons of them, especially when they tell me nice things about myself. Well, actually, that is really more directed at my mother. I need to remind her that not EVERYTHING she is thinking needs to be shared with the world! Just kidding Mom, you are by far my biggest fan. In all seriousness, I do love hearing from my readers so if you have a thought to share I welcome it with open arms. This blog is meant to be a great representation of me, especially for all of those wonderful clients who I don’t get to meet until our shoot. I can promise you it’s 150% all me and I am super proud of that. I plan on sharing amazing pictures, scrumptious food, strange tales, short stories, an irrational number of photos of my dog because I don’t have kids so I am a little obsessed with him and pretty much anything else I might be thinking or doing.
Oh, and if you LOVE this blog and are thinking to yourself, “Self, I think I would like a blog just a radical only even better,” just check out FLOSITES at www.flosites.com! They are amazing, worked so incredibly hard on this and were infinitely patient with me. I am beyond-words happy with them and want to share the love with you.

For those of you who know me, you might have heard me talk about Kristen & Frank. I knew the moment I met them that I was going to love them for a long time. I vividly remember saying to my friend and second-shooter Nate, after leaving their wedding reception, “They are one of my favorite clients I have ever photographed. They are just so friggin’ awesome!” The next vivid memory I have is receiving an email the next morning informing me that Frank had been life-flighted back to the States after paralyzing himself in the pool about an hour after we left. I was utterly in shock, in complete denial and was overwhelmed with a tornado of sadness. You can view my original post about their wedding and the accident here: extraordinary heart : Kristen+Frank
Although Frank is now a quadriplegic, his progress and positive energy is unbelievably inspiring. Not to mention Kristen, who has not only stood by Frank’s side from the moment they said “I do,” but discovered she had a brain tumor just months after the accident. The amount of challenges that they have faced in the past year and a half is astonishing. The bottom line? They just love each other. A lot. Immeasurable amounts of love. It is something that every human desires, to be unconditionally loved. They have taught me so much since meeting them and I am a better person having them in my life now. They have taught me about the kind of love I want and not to settle for anything less than that.
Upon learning about the accident I KNEW I wanted to do something super special for them. To this day, they have been unable to look through all their wedding images I took. It is just entirely too painful. So, I told them that I would fly out to California for their anniversary and give them beautiful photos that they could look at, put on the walls and feel good about. It ended up being more like an anniversary and a half visit! It was so wonderful to see them again, spend some time together and really catch up on what they have been dealing with since the last time we saw each other. I started out by meeting Frank at his rehab center and shooting some of his work in the gym. Following that, we headed back to the house and did a quick portrait session with Kristen. It was truly a pleasure to see them again and even more so photographing them.
So, before I share the photos I wanted to let you know that they were the premier episode on the new show Breakthrough with Tony Robbins! It aired last night at 8pm and I have included the episode below. I strongly urge you all to watch it. Their story is incredibly moving and will remind you all about what is really important in life. It isn’t the bonus you receive after neglecting your loved ones because you are always at work. It isn’t the fancy car that makes the street traffic turn heads, whose payments are more than your mortgage. It isn’t the plasma screen tvs, the iPhone4s, the Nikon D8 galactic, the Anthropologie arsenal in your closet, 20yr aged bottle of red or the perfect home with the perfect fence in the perfect neighborhood. It really is all about those you love and who love you in return. It’s about owning yourself and discovering just how strong you are. It’s about committing to be the best you can possibly be for everyone else around you. Kristen and Frank have truly demonstrated to me the power of unselfish love for each other and for themselves.
*warning* grab a box of Kleenex before watching this.
And here are some of my favorites from my day with them a couple of months ago.

I could seriously go on and on about how much I love my friends Frankie and Greg. It was an absolute joy to be a part of their wedding, from the moment I walked into the front door of her Mom’s house until they disappeared into the foggy night. The amount of love between them and all of their favorite people is immeasurable and infectious and I just wished I could stay inside that day forever. Frankie’s smile did not fade, filling the space wherever she was. Greg could not stop laughing and joking and hugging and thanking. It truly was one of my most favorite wedding days ever. I think the images will speak from themselves, so I would love to share them with you. Also, you can see more by taking a look at their slide show here:

I photographed Amanda and Garrett’s wedding a couple of years ago in Richmond, Va and I immediately fell in love with the both of them. Actually, I’ve kind of become an honorary member of the family as I am about to photograph my FOURTH Magruder wedding next month! I was so excited to hear that they were expecting this past winter and even more excited when I heard they wanted me to come photograph their new baby boy. Kellen, although completely alert the entire session, was so good. He just laid there and smiled, yawned, stared and warmed my heart. I thought I would share some of my favorite photos of the day with all of you!
Amanda Magruder Kirsten, once again, you are amazing! You've given us a piece of his babyhood that I don't think I could capture in a memory better than this! We are absolutely so lucky to have met you. I look forward to more of these sessions! See you in June!!! (May 26, 2010 07:57 pm)

I had the privilege of photographing Emily and John in their hometown about a month ago. Emily and John were the lucky winners of the Outer Banks Wedding Expo’s DREAM WEDDING and for the past two year I have donated the engagement session to the lucky couple. It was such a pleasure to meet and work with them both. Emily is by far one of the kindest people I have ever met, she even had an Easter Basket waiting for me when I got to their house. Because I was traveling, I had Mingus with me. Without a second thought John took him by the leash and led him outside to their back yard to go potty. They are just wonderful people and we had an absolute blast spending some time together. Their wedding was a couple of days ago and I heard it was perfect. CONGRATULATIONS GUYS!!!
